Learning Labs
Teacher Labs
This session provides teachers with an opportunity to learn how to embed Black protagonist themed picture books into their daily practice. Books used in this session will cover the following subject areas: Math, English Language Arts, Science, Social Studies/Civics, and the Creative Arts.
Parent Labs
Parent Labs are interactive sessions when parents and children convene to co-create literacy tools, which will be used in the home. The purpose of creating these tools is to support parents’ children in creating a reading culture within the home environment. The labs also offer parents an opportunity to learn about innovative educational approaches used in the organization.
Dream Labs
Dream Labs offer children the opportunity to read a book based on their common dreams or interests. During these sessions, a facilitator supports students in the reading process by facilitating dialogue about the books relate to their dreams or interests.
Dream Advocate Labs
The purpose of this lab is to assist community educators in understanding how to meet children at their dreams. This is the first workshop of a 4-part series. Meeting children at their dreams requires educators to first reflect on their own dreams. By ‘dreams’, we are referring to a person’s aspirations, goals, and imagination of the best version of themselves. Reflection on their dreams provides educators with the insight and empathy in engaging with children who are also discovering who they are. This workshop will walk educators through an interactive learning experience where they will reflect on the core aspects of the Dream Framework, which they will use as a tool to foster a dream-centered learning experience with the children in the afterschool program.
