MLK 360: Exploring Dr. King’s Holistic Legacy with Students at The Ellis School
What is the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.? When people hear Dr. King's name, they tend to follow up with a quote from his "I Have a Dream" speech. Seeing Dr. King from this perspective is not only one-sided, but it also lacks the depth that a man and hero of his caliber deserves. In the early weeks of December, I had the honor and pleasure of facilitating an MLK workshop at The Ellis School.
Accepting the invitation from Dr. Denise La Rosa allowed me the opportunity to revisit the life and works of Dr. King. Revisiting his life from the perspectives of Father, Brother, Philosopher, and Activist re-inspired me and deepened my appreciation of Dr. King's contribution to assisting in the development of a better world. What made this revisiting of King's work so powerful was the fact that I had the opportunity to engage the future game-changing leaders of The Ellis School.
Engaging in dialogue about MLK from a holistic perspective allowed us to collectively make meaning of his ideas based on our contemporary context. The purpose of exposing students to this holistic perspective served as a mirror to let them know: just as Dr. King was an ordinary person who assisted in the development of a better world, they too can do the same in their own unique way!
In conclusion, workshops (learning labs) are treasured experiences because, no matter how much I prepare as an educator, the comments and questions from students always inspire new meanings, new thoughts, and new paths of inquiry for all of us. Again, I would like to thank Dr. La Rosa for inviting me to facilitate a workshop on one of my heroes and learn with and from these future leaders!
